"Mathematica
computer algebra system is indeed a remarkable tool making
an impression on students and the instructors and brings
mathematics to life. It is a computing tool, visualization
tool and a presentation tool all in a single environment. At
USM, we use Mathematica in research and teaching.
In particular the course MSG282-Modelling Laboratory II that
I teach since 2003 at the School of Mathematical Sciences
makes full use of Mathematica. This course introduces
basics understanding of the structure and syntax of
Mathematica program. Students learn to familiarize with
the numeric, symbolic and graphical computations using
Mathematica built-in functions. They are exposed to the
Mathematica programming styles that include
procedural, rule-based and functional programming. To motivate and elucidate concepts
that are essential for constructive use of
Mathematica, some problems
solving in Calculus, Differential Equations, simple
mathematical modeling and data analysis and visualization
are considered. Final year students are expected to
complete their project. The photo shows a group of students
under my supervision after their project viva. Topics for
the project undertaken include Cellular Automata modeling
with Mathematica and
