One of
the important developments in computational techniques
in the last forty years or so has been the evolution of
computer algebra systems (CASs) or symbolic mathematical
computer programs. These systems allow the direct
manipulation of mathematical symbols and permit the
possibility of exact, error-free solutions of long,
complicated problems.
Objectives
The
objectives of these two seminars are :
- To
introduce CASs to the participants
- To
provide an overview of the capabilities and typical
usages of CASs in diversified fields
- To
discuss the history, availability and applications
and references for further information on CASs
- To
provide the participants some experience using a CAS
(Mathematica) for some typical applications that
involve interactive usage and some simple
programming.

The event was spearheaded by Dr. Yuzita Yaacob
(Developing
Prototype for Courseware Multimedia Interactive
Learning - Mathematica Enhance Calculus (ILMEC),
Proceedings of the International Symposium on
Information Technology 2003)
and co-ordinated by Ms. Asnili Marniwati
who had invited Professor Stanly Steinberg from
University of New Mexico as the main speaker.
OPTIMAL Expert was to further co-ordinate
by providing Mathematica in both the occasions as well as assisting during the
tutorial session. |

Professor Stanly Steinberg's research
focuses on the use of numerical and symbolic
computing techniques for solving partial
differential equations (PDEs) and most recently
on the Modeling of signal transduction in cells.
He
is the co-director of the Center for
Spatiotemporal Modeling of Cell Signaling (STMC),
a NIH/NIGMS Center of Excellence in Complex
Biomedical Systems Research localted in Health
Sciences Center (HSC) at the University of New

Attendance

The event
had received a tremendous response from UKM &
UIA. There were approximately 60
attendees ranging from Head of Faculty,
Lecturers, PHD Researchers, and post-graduate
students showed up during the 3-day seminars. |
